Layering with Letters Workshop by Roann Mathias

    Workshop Description

In this workshop, you will learn how to create multiple layers using text. This kind of layering creates interesting patterns, as well as a sense of depth in your art.  Using gesso, acrylic paint and acrylic mediums on paper, we will paint on and scrape out letterforms.  Neuland will be the primary style of lettering for this class, so there will be time spent reviewing that hand.

Roann should need no introduction to our guild as an accomplished calligrapher and teacher.  Roann is a mixed media artist specializing in calligraphy. She designs greeting cards, stationery and calendars for Conception Abbey’s Printery House. Other clients include Cleo, Abbey Press and DaySpring. Her work has been published in Letter Arts Review and Somerset Studio Magazine, and exhibited at Chicago’s Newberry Library. She has taught workshops to guilds around the country, and was on the faculty of Island Magic in 2007. See some of her work at http://roanndesigns.blogspot.com or www.roanndesigns.com.

    Modernized Illuminated Letters

    Oct. 26 – Nov. 11 // Register by Oct. 19
    Mondays & Wednesdays @ 7–9:30 p.m. 6 Sessions / Tuition: $255 / Materials: $15

Traditional illuminated letters in manuscripts are luscious, with their jewel tones and gold leaf. Using those as inspiration, this class will bring them into the modern world. Topics include instruction on how to mix colors, how to draw floral designs, and how to use shading and highlighting. Learn to create beautiful border designs and patterns. Then we will look at modern alternatives to gold leaf and how to use them. Students should have some kind of art experience, but no calligraphy experience is necessary.

Watercolor has always been thought to be a tricky, unforgiving medium and many artists shy away from using it in favor of more "manageable" choices. Nonsense! In this workshop, we'll get a handle on the way watercolor works, playing with its properties and embracing its eccentricities. Part of the joy of working with watercolor is its penchant for creating surprising effects, perfect for lettering artists to exploit. On the first day, we'll work with the basics, producing small pages that will be the support for our exploration of added lettering on the second day. Come with an open mind and good supplies, and we'll enjoy discovering what this medium can share with us!
This class is for all skill levels.

Things Greek and Gilded: A Five Day Class with Georgia Angelopolous

    Dates: May 30-June 3, 2015
    Location: Studio Nysha
8410 Wolf Lake Drive Suite 109
                    Bartlett, TN 38133
Time: 9:00-5:00 with after-dinner work time
    Cost: $350
For complete details please contact Dana Jacobson at dj18a@yahoo.com.

    THINGS GREEK AND GILDED

Exploring the rich history of Greek writing from its earliest appearance over 2500 years ago will help us better understand its crucial link to our own and expand our way of seeing and understanding letters. Examining various writing systems and styles as exercises will furnish interesting possibilities in our work. We will be working with Greek letters and short bits of ancient texts, but will also be devising Latin forms to harmonize with the Greek so as to write in English. Letters will be explored in terms of their pattern making potential, as well as unique designs in their own right.

To complement our lettering we will work with motifs apropos to each period gleaned from historical artifacts; we will create gilded and painted designs using a variety of techniques – flat gilding and tooling with various instruments, debossing, sgraffito, and cutting and collage with papers we will gild. We will also consider writing over top of gilded surfaces and explore some of the traditional Greek palettes. Students will be encouraged to create a book documenting their explorations or work on a finished piece based on what inspires them through the process.

Things Greek and Gilded I: Gilding

We will be learning to gild using traditional and modern techniques on various surfaces. Though we will touch on raised gilding, our main focus will be flat gilding - learning how to tool the gold to create beautiful patterns in relief and experimenting with different techniques that can be used in traditional and contemporary work. Every participant will create a record of techniques they can use as well as a gold ‘palette’ or chart for future reference using a wide variety of gold alloys and metals. Complementing this will be a study of the ancient Greek palette; we will create simple designs with it and then use our gold charts to choose which of our metals best harmonizes with each design. Raw materials and ground pigments will be brought in to show the origin of our colours and contemporary alternatives will be discussed. This class is intended to provide a good introduction to illumination and work in ways that are sensitive to our text and intention.

    Versals Workshop 4

    When: November 22, 2014; 9 am – 12:30 noon
    Where:
     Appling Road East Police Precinct
    Instructor: Ann Rabinovitz
Supplies: [Download Supply List] (Word doc)

We have had lots of fun learning versals and decorating letters and now, thanks to Judy Sproles, on Sat. Nov. 22nd, we will learn how to decorate a monochromatic letter, that is, using different values of one color.

The color is Paynes Gray and she says that a tube runs about $10.00, so we thought that two people could share a tube, as apparently one does not need the whole tube. You do not need to have attended the previous workshops to attend this one. Thus, if you would wish to share a tube, I will purchase them. This means that I will need to know by Mon., Nov. 10th if you would like to do share a tube so I will have time to track enough tubes down.

And we will also need to know who is coming so Judy can have enough paper and handouts for all.  Please e-mail me (annsrab@bellsouth.net) or call by the 10th 901-757-2403, so that all the responses are with one person. I have attached a picture of the letter that we will be painting along with the complete supply list, cost etc. Please let me know if there are any questions.
